Why Does My Vape Gurgle or Spit? Fixing a Flooded Airway

Gurgling means liquid has pooled in the airway instead of being vaporised. It is not usually a fault, and it clears in about thirty seconds. Left alone it turns into spitback — hot droplets thrown up the mouthpiece — which is worth avoiding.

Clearing it

1. Turn the device so the mouthpiece points down.
2. Loosely cover the airflow intake with a fingertip.
3. Draw two or three times without the device firing, so air pushes the pooled liquid out.
4. Wipe the mouthpiece with a dry tissue.

If liquid comes out onto the tissue, that was the problem. Wash your hands afterwards.

Why it happened

Drawing too hard is the usual reason. Pulling harder than the airflow is designed for drags liquid past the wick faster than the coil can vaporise it, and the excess collects. A gentler, longer draw produces more vapour and less pooling — the two are not in tension.

Cold is the other reason. A device that has been outside or in a cold car accumulates condensation in the airway, which then gurgles on the first few puffs and settles down as it warms.

Stopping it coming back

Draw gently rather than hard. Store the device upright with the mouthpiece up. Let it reach room temperature before using it after time in the cold. These are the same habits that prevent leaking, because it is fundamentally the same problem at a different stage.

When it is not just gurgling
