Boost mode drives the coil harder — more vapour, warmer flavour, roughly double the consumption. Manufacturers call it Boost, Pulse, Turbo or Pro depending on the brand, but the mechanism is the same.

What is actually happening

The device sends more power to the coil, so it reaches a higher temperature and vaporises more liquid per puff. On dual-mesh devices it frequently means driving both mesh strips instead of one.

The result is a warmer, denser, more intense draw. Flavour changes too — higher temperatures bring out sweetness and can make menthol feel sharper.

The cost

Roughly double the liquid and battery per puff, which roughly halves your total puffs. This is worth being explicit about, because rated puff counts almost always assume standard mode. When it is worth it

• A fuller draw occasionally — yes, that is what it is for.
• The last portion of a tank — can help, though if the flavour is thinning you may just be near the end.
• Permanently — you are roughly doubling your running cost. Most people who try it settle back to standard.

Boost and burnt taste

Higher power increases the risk of outrunning the wick, which is what produces a burnt taste. If you use boost, leave longer between puffs than you would otherwise — the wick needs more time to resupply.

Knowing which mode you are in

Devices with a screen show it directly. Without one you are relying on an indicator light or counting button presses, which is one of the quieter arguments for a display.
