Vape Firing By Itself? What Auto-Firing Means and What to Do

A vape that fires without being drawn on has a stuck sensor, and it is the one fault worth treating with urgency. Every other problem on this blog is an inconvenience. This one means a coil is heating unattended, often inside a pocket where there is nothing to carry the heat away.

Deal with it first, diagnose it after.

What to do right now

1. Take it out of your pocket or bag.
2. Put it somewhere open and non-flammable — a hard countertop, not a sofa, a bed or a pile of paper.
3. Do not put it on charge.
4. Let it cool completely before handling it further.

Why it happens

Draw-activated devices fire when a pressure sensor detects airflow. If e-liquid from a leak, or condensation from a cold pocket, bridges that sensor's contacts, the device reads it as a permanent draw and keeps firing. A leak is very often the precursor, so a device that had been leaking and then started auto-firing is a coherent story rather than two unrelated faults.

Less commonly the sensor or its circuit has failed outright, which is a manufacturing defect.

Why you cannot fix it on a disposable

On a refillable device you could dry the sensor and clean the contacts. On a sealed disposable you cannot reach them, and getting to them means opening a housing that contains a lithium cell. That is not a repair worth attempting for a device with a fixed lifespan. Treat it as finished.

Disposing of it

An auto-firing device should not go in household waste. Let it discharge somewhere safe and open, then take it to a battery or e-waste collection point. Many hardware shops and municipal recycling centres accept them.

This is a defect, not wear
