How to Dispose of a Vape Safely (and Why the Bin Is Wrong)
Take it to a battery or e-waste collection point — not the household bin. Every disposable vape contains a lithium cell, and lithium cells that get crushed in a refuse truck or a sorting facility are a documented cause of fires.
This is the least interesting page on this blog and the one with the highest stakes, so it is short.
Why the bin is the wrong answer
Waste collection compacts. A lithium cell that is crushed or punctured can short internally, heat rapidly and ignite — and it does so inside a vehicle full of combustible material, or at a sorting facility. Fires traced to discarded batteries have risen alongside disposable vape sales, and it is an entirely avoidable category of harm.
Where to take them
- Battery collection bins in hardware shops, electronics retailers and many supermarkets.
- Municipal e-waste or household hazardous waste sites.
- Retailer take-back schemes, where offered.
Searching for "battery recycling near me" generally finds something within a short distance.
Do not open it
Do not pry the casing apart to remove the cell. Prying damages exactly the thing that must not be damaged. Hand the device over intact — collection points expect them that way.
The same applies to any idea of refilling a sealed disposable. It is not designed for it, and the risk is not proportionate to the saving.
Devices that are already faulty
A device that is swollen, leaking badly, very hot, or firing by itself needs more care. Move it somewhere open and non-flammable, do not charge it, let it cool, and take it to a collection point promptly. Tell staff there that it is damaged.
Keep them away from children
A used device still contains residual e-liquid, and concentrated nicotine is seriously toxic if swallowed. Do not leave finished devices lying around waiting for a trip to the recycling point — keep them somewhere out of reach in the meantime.
Products sold by VIP Sales are for adults 21 and over. Nicotine is an addictive chemical.
