How to Charge a Rechargeable Disposable Vape (and How Long It Takes)

Use a low-output USB-C source — a computer port or a modest wall charger — and expect 30 to 90 minutes. The single most common mistake is reaching for the fastest charger in the house. Phone fast-chargers are built to push a lot of current into a large cell, and a small vape cell is not designed to take it.

The right way to do it

  • Use the lowest-output source available. A laptop USB port is close to ideal.
  • Charge on a hard surface — a desk or countertop, not a bed, sofa or pile of clothes.
  • Stay in the room. Charge while you are awake and nearby, and unplug when it finishes.
  • Do not draw on it while it charges. Charging and discharging simultaneously makes it run hot for no benefit.

What the light is telling you

Conventions vary by manufacturer, but the broad pattern holds: a steady or pulsing light during charge, and a change of colour or a light going out at full. A device that shows nothing at all when plugged in has either a dead cell or a dirty port — wipe the port with a dry cotton bud and try a different cable before concluding it is dead.

A device that blinks when you draw but charges normally is telling you something different again.

Why charging stops working

Lithium cells have a finite number of cycles, and the small cells in disposables have fewer than a phone. A device that used to hold a day's use and now lasts an hour has an aged cell, and no amount of charging recovers that. If there is still liquid in the tank, that is genuinely wasted product — which is why battery capacity is worth weighing alongside the puff rating when choosing. Our guide to puff counts covers the comparison.

What never to do

Do not charge a device that is leaking, physically damaged, swollen, or firing by itself. Do not charge overnight. Do not use a damaged cable. Damaged lithium cells fail in the way lithium cells fail, and the whole point of these rules is that the failure is rare and the consequences are not trivial.

Disposal

When a rechargeable disposable is genuinely finished it contains a lithium cell and belongs at a battery or e-waste collection point rather than in household waste.
